Crawling time

This week has been a rather odd one. It started off being very exciting and nostalgic. We had our last ever lessons on Tuesday so there were lots of parties in classes and saying goodbye to teachers. We also had our Leavers' Picnic on Tuesday where we all dressed up to the theme of "Childhood Toys and Secret Joys" ( I was Little Miss Sunshine) and paraded around the dining hall before heading out to the orchard for our picnic. So it was all busy busy busy and then suddenly on Wednesday study leave started and I have no structured activities all day. And let me tell you it is hard trying to revise by yourself all day. The hours just drag on and never seem to pass! Nevertheless, I am pushing through, trying not to get distracted and remembering what I am working for.

Boarding is very strangely quiet at the moment as most people have gone home for Study Leave. It's good in the sense of there being limited distractions but is quite isolating at times.

This afternoon I am going back to see my surgeon about my foot as it's still giving me quite a lot of pain even after the operation. He may want to remove the plate but we'll wait and see! I just need it to be good enough for me to train on because...My Dad and I are entered for the Royal Parks Half Marathon in October! We are truly crazy. Dad's run it once before, in 2009 but this is the first year that I am old enough to run it so we decided to do it together! We are running for Asthma UK as it's a cause very close to our hearts as my sister suffers from extreme brittle asthma. I will give more updates on my training progress as it occurs.

Hectic Adulthood

Things have been crazy around here! The craziest thing is that I am now legally an adult. I had an amazing birthday, firstly celebrating at school with my friends and then with my family in the evening. I got lots of lovely birthday presents including a gorgeous watch from my parents but my biggest surprise was discovering my sister inside a big box- I had no idea she was going to be home! The video of me discovering her will shortly make its way to Youtube! I took the family to the pub in the evening and bought them all a drink which was really nice.

This weekend I had a small party with skiing friends, a few school friends and my godparents. It was good fun and I had a gorgeous cake! It was a white 18 with pretty little butterflies all over it. We now have rather a lot left...Caroline had some for breakfast.

The whole week was actually very busy. We had a great last open house in boarding on Wednesday night with Pimms and awesome food. We ended up turning the sitting room into a dance floor and jumping around to some classics until rather late. We also started having our last ever lessons in things which is a very strange feeling. It also makes exams seem suddenly a lot closer.

Today I shall be having a more relaxed day, hopefully getting some good revision in and not stressing too much!

A Golden Weekend

Sorry for being MIA over the weekend but my family and I motored off up to Cambridge because 12th May was my Grandparents' Golden Wedding Anniversary. We had a great weekend all staying in a posh hotel together and generally having a good time. Even the weather behaved and for about the first time in a month it didn't pour torrentially! We visited the Botanic Gardens which was nice and relaxing and we went swimming in the hotel's pool (Caroline and I took a sneaky and well-needed trip to the sauna!). We ate at Formal Hall at Emmanuel College on Friday courtesy of Caroline and then on Saturday we had a very fancy dinner in the hotel with flowers and balloons. It was really nice to be able to dress up and do something a bit different. I even managed to get in some good intense revision time which made me feel a little less panicked!

Things are a bit strange at school now that the Upper 5 and Lower 6th have gone on Study Leave. It suddenly makes the fact that we are leaving soon feel very real. It also makes exams feel very close but I wont dwell on that!

I have taken some big steps in my recovery over the past few days and have resolved a lot of issues in my head that will help me overcome my anorexia. I am now much more at ease with the path I am on and am feeling good!

We started practising the song we are going to be singing at our Leavers' Communion and on Speech Day and it is very emotional! I'm  not sure that the tears will hold off when we do it for real.

Things are winding down in class now, we are finishing off syllabuses and getting into some serious revision. I am surprisingly looking forward to my birthday this week. For a long time I have been dreading it but, partly because of what I said earlier about my recovery, I am feeling much happier about it and can't wait!

So I'm back at school after the nice 3 day weekend and let me just say, I need another one! Work is so intense at the moment because we are trying to cram all the last bits in and revise and work on exam technique. By the end of the day I'm truly knackered and I know I still have to work for most of the evening! I may not be doing much physical activity but boy am I whacked!

I had a guitar lesson yesterday lunchtime which was the first time I'd played in a while thanks to my hectic schedule and I had a great time. There's something about that instrument that just relaxes me and makes me smile. It would be a dream to ever be a tenth of the player that my teacher is, he's insanely good. I am hopefully going to carry on lessons with him during my gap year and then find a teacher wherever I end up at uni. I never want to stop playing!

This morning my friend Steph and I got up at 6:45 (may not sound that early but as boarders we are used to getting up at 8:20!) and went to boarders' swimming. It was the first time I'd properly swum in ages-I don't count the kind of swimming I do on holiday, that's more splashing/floating around- and the place I felt it most forearms! A bit random but they do say that swimming tones every muscle in your body so I guess they have just been underworked recently.

Tonight we have our last ever chapel choir which will be very sad :( I love chapel choir because it's such a small, select group and boarders' chapel is such a nice environment to sing in. Hopefully we'll have a good last piece!

I have been quite busy recently redoing practical tasks for my science subjects. I just had a Chemistry evaluative paper which I think went ok and after school I have a Physics qualitative paper. I find it so hard to motivate myself for these, it doesn't feel like it's part of my exams which it definitely is! Ah well, fingers crossed they have all gone ok. I know that the Chemistry one I resat last week didn't improve my mark at all which is a bit of a bummer but I knew that it hadn't gone well...what can you do.

That's about all I'm going to ramble on about for now! Do check out my Youtube channel at to see some videos I've been doing. I am very open to video suggestions/requests so if there's anything you want to see me do or hear me talk about, let me know!

Pyjama day!

Today was what some may call a lazy day judging by the fact that I did not change out of my pyjamas. On the contrary, it was a rather productive day and a comfy one at that.

As seems to be the tone of my life at the moment, I did lots of work- chemistry revision and then a chemistry paper and then some prep that I had been set. I managed to finish off the work I'd actually been set so tomorrow will be entirely a revision day where I plan to do some maths papers which I haven't looked at all since January and in any detail since last June!

I also did some preparation for my 18th birthday gathering: I designed invites, created a Laura Quiz and ordered paper plates, napkins and food. Another good job done.

The Daboo housefhold found itself short of pudding and in plentiful supply of overripe bananas so I got out my apron and got baking. I had meant to video this one for my Vlog on Youtube but due to the pyjama day/general need of a good wash and the fact that I was in a rush to get it done so my Dad could cook lunch, I didn't have time so a picture and recipe will  have to do! I will however definitely video the making of my Fruit Curry tomorrow and that will go up soon!

Laura's Banana Bread

  • 150g (5 oz) caster sugar
  • 50g (2 oz) butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 3 very ripe bananas, mashed
  • 200g (7 oz) plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

  • Method
    1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4. Line a loaf tin with baking parchment.
    2. In a medium bowl, beat the sugar and butter until smooth and creamy. Beat in the eggs, water and bananas with the sugar mixture until well blended.
    3. Mix in the flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and baking powder just until the mixture is moistened. Be sure to scrape the sides of the bowl to blend all ingredients. Pour into loaf tin.
    4. Bake for about 60 minutes. Bread is done when the top is firm to the touch and a golden brown colour. Time will vary according to loaf size and oven type. When bread is removed from oven, allow it to cool on it's side for 10 minutes, then remove from tin and let cool on a wire rack.
This was lovely and moist and was great on it's own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Definitely best served warm!

    Yes, I'm back again!

I can't quite believe it and I'm sure you can't either but here I am, as promised, with another post not long after the last!

Today has been a day full of attempts to do some work (somewhat successfully) and other general oddjobs. One exciting thing that happened: I gave in my application for my first ever job! I won't tell you what I applied for yet (I don't want to jinx it) but I am looking for a job during my gap year and I really want this one!

This evening for dinner my dad and I made a starter of new potatoes with mojo sauce (a canary island dish!) it is delicious and very simple. A good recipe can be found here:

Tomorrow in between work I am making a banana bread and Monday I am making fruit curry- I will try and do a video of them for YouTube where I have started making video/blog thingys. My channel is lilmisslollyboo if you fancy checking them out!

I am very much looking forward to having Monday off school even though I'll be working all day!

    Long time no see

So as was inevitable I haven't posted in absolutely ages! My excuse is I was in hospital for anorexia for five months and I've been trying to get my life back on track!

My life has been hectic recently. It's the usual stressful run up to exams and I just can't wait until they're over! Except that will mean I'm closer to leaving school which I am very sad about because I love it and I have some amazing friends.

I managed to fail my driving test yesterday morning :s I drove really well but then got edgy because I'd been sitting at a roundabout for ages and so I pulled out when something was coming! Have rebooked it for the 30th May!

I promise to post again soon but right now I NEED sleep!
